چکیده

We describe an operator splitting technique based on physics rather than on dimension for the numerical solution of a nonlinear system of partial differential equations which models three-phase flow through heterogeneous porous media. The model for three-phase flow considered in this work takes into account capillary forces, general relations for the relative permeability functions and variable porosity and permeability fields. In our numerical procedure a high resolution, nonoscillatory, second order, conservative central difference scheme is used for the approximation of the nonlinear system of hyperbolic conservation lawsmodeling the convective transport of the fluid phases. This scheme is combined with locally conservative mixed finite elements for the numerical solution of the parabolic and elliptic problems associated with the diffusive transport of fluid phases and the pressure-velocity problem. This numerical procedure has been used to investigate the existence and stability of nonclassical shock waves (called transitional or undercompressive shock waves) in two-dimensional heterogeneous flows, thereby extending previous results for one-dimensional flow problems. Numerical experiments indicate that the operator splitting technique discussed here leads to computational efficiency and accurate numerical results. Numerical Simulation and Estimation of the Transvers Macrodispersivity Coefficient of Aqueous Phase (Miscible) Contaminants of Salt Water in a Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Porous Media

Deterioration of groundwater resources in coastal regions due to the progression of saline water in aquifers in these regions is currently one of the important issues in providing water needs in these areas. In coastal regions, saline water enters the aquifer from below in shape of wedge. Due to the difference in the density between fresh and salty water, an interface zone forms between two flu...

Transitional Waves in Three-Phase Flows in Heterogeneous Petroleum Reservoirs

Natural reservoirs are porous and permeable rocks containing deposits of hydrocarbons (oil reservoirs) or pure water (aquifers). Porosity and permeability are the most important physical properties of reservoirs that affect flow and transport. In general these geological parameters are stochastically modeled (see [?, ?] and references therein). As a consequence the equations governing flow and ...

Numerical Solution of Reservoir Flow Models Based Onlarge Time Step Operator Splitting

During recent years the authors and collaborators have been involved in an activity related to the construction and analysis of large time step operator splitting algorithms for the numerical simulation of multi-phase ow in heterogeneous porous media. The purpose of these lecture notes is to review some of this activity. We illustrate the main ideas behind these novel operator splitting algorit...

A New Approach for Constructing Pore Network Model of Two Phase Flow in Porous Media

Development of pore network models for real porous media requires a detailed understanding of physical processes occurring on the microscopic scale and a complete description of porous media morphology. In this study, the microstructure of porous media has been represented by three dimensional networks of interconnected pores and throats which are designed by an object oriented approach. Af...
